The Rules for Revision<\/p>\n
Summary of the fourteen rules drawn up, apparently by King James himself, for the guidance of the revisers:<\/p>\n
1. The Bishops\u2019 Bible to be followed \u201cand as little altered as the original will permit.\u201d<\/p>\n
2. The proper names \u201cto be retained as near as may be \u2026 as vulgarly used.\u201d<\/p>\n
3. Old ecclesiastical words not to be changed, \u201cas the word \u2018Church\u2019 not to be translated \u2018congregation\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
4. Words of varying interpretations to be rendered in accordance with patristic tradition and the analogy of faith.<\/p>\n
5. No change to be made in the chapter divisions.<\/p>\n
6. No notes except to explain Hebrew or Greek words.<\/p>\n
7. Cross references to be inserted.<\/p>\n
8. As each reviser completes the portion assigned to him, all his company should compare results and decide on the rendering to be chosen.<\/p>\n
9. The completed work of each company to be sent to the other companies \u201cto be considered of seriously and judiciously; for, his Majesty is very careful in this point.\u201d<\/p>\n
10. Doubts thence arising to be settled \u201cat the general meeting of the chief persons of each company, at the end of the work.\u201d<\/p>\n
11. In really obscure passages the help of other learned people is to be sought.<\/p>\n
12. The bishops are to look for men capable of assisting in the work.<\/p>\n
13. The directors to be the deans of Westminster and Chester and the regius professors of Hebrew and Greek.<\/p>\n
14. \u201cThese translations to be used when they agree better with the text than the Bishops\u2019 Bible: namely, Tindal\u2019s, Matthews\u2019, Coverdale\u2019s, Whitchurch\u2019s, the Geneva.\u201d<\/p>\n
