The coach said he had studied it in college. \u201cSo you think you\u2019re good,\u201d said McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>The coach replied: \u201cI don\u2019t know how good I am, but it\u2019s a subject I\u2019ve studied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>\u201cAll right,\u201d McCarthy said, \u201cI\u2019ll give you a test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>McCarthy said that a few years before he\u2019d had a problem and had gone to Frankie Crosetti, his shortstop.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>\u201cFrank,\u201d McCarthy said, \u201cI\u2019m not satisfied with the way Lou Gehrig is playing first base. He\u2019s too lackadaisical. I want you to help me. From now on, charge every ground ball. When you get it, fire it as quickly and as hard as you can to first base. Knock Gehrig off the bag if you can. I don\u2019t care if you throw wild or not, but throw it fast and make it tough for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>Crosetti demurred and said: \u201cMaybe Lou won\u2019t like the idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>\u201cWho cares what Gehrig likes!\u201d McCarthy snapped. \u201cJust do as I tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>McCarthy then said to the coach: \u201cNow that\u2019s the story. What conclusions do you draw from it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>The coach considered the matter for a minute, then answered: \u201cI guess you were trying to wake up Gehrig.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>\u201cSee?\u201d McCarthy shrugged his shoulders in resignation. \u201cYou missed the point entirely. There wasn\u2019t a damned thing wrong with Gehrig. Crosetti was the one who was sleeping.
