Having given some examples of things that are not evidence that a work wrought among a people is not a work of the Spirit of God, I now proceed to show positively what are the sure, distinguishing scripture evidences and marks of a work of the Spirit of God, by which we may proceed in judging any operation we find in ourselves, or see among a people, without danger of being misled. And in this, as I said before, I shall confine myself to those marks which are given us by the apostle in 1 John 4, where this matter is dealt with particularly, and more plainly and fully than anywhere else in the Bible.
