Sinónimos: alazoneía G212; kenodoxía G2754; húbris G5196. This is essentially contempt for others evidencing itself by acts of wantonness; an arrogant recklessness as to justice and the feelings of others.
Alazoneía is a sin against truth itself. Huperēphanía, on the other hand, is a sin against love agápē which necessitates the searching for the needs of others and meeting those needs. In 1Jn 2:16 we have the expression hē alazoneía toú bíou. In this verse, alazoneía is not only overestimating the value of possessions.
There are three words. One is kaucháomai G2744, to glory, boast, exult, whether in a good sense Rom 5:2-3; 1Co 1:31 or in a bad sense 1Co 4:7; Gal 6:13; Eph 2:9; Jas 4:16. There are two subst., kaúchēma G2745, a boast, the actual boasting, and kaúchēsis G2746. Paul uses the word in a good sense to indicate the legitimate pride which an apostle or Christian may feel as he contemplates the effectiveness of his testimony, ministry, or service in the life and conduct of others 2Co 9:3; Php 2:16. It also expresses the sacred glorying of God or Christ 1Co 1:31; Php 3:3. This group of words is derived from auchḗn n.f.. One may hold his head up because of what he thinks he has made of himself which is kaúchēsis in the wrong sense. The Christian holds his head high because of the indwelling Christ who has made him to be what he is. The recognition of one’s position in Christ is reason for glorying.
