Alban Butler

Historian and hagiologist. Born in Appletree, Northamptonshire, England on 24 October 1710 ; died Saint-Omer, France on 15 May 1773 of natural causes. After ordination he taught at the English College at Douai, and devoted himself to compiling “The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and Other Principal Saints,” the work by which he is best known. He was appointed to the presidency of the English college at Saint-Omer, France in 1766 , and was also called upon to devote himself to active diocesan work.
