Swiss anatomist and physiologist. Born 16 October 1708 at Berne, Switzerland; died 7 December 1777. Famed for his anatomical and physiological researches, particularly on the irritability of the muscles. Directed the organization of the theater of anatomy and school of obstetrics of the University of Gottingen. Wrote numerous anatomical and botanical works.
