Castor and Pollux were so called, either from the cessation of the war, , which they had undertaken to rescue their sister Helen, whom Theseus had carried off; or from their singular care to preserve the city Aphidnae, which they had reduced to submission, from the ravages of the soldiers. The Greek word literally means kings.
