Beautiful Gate

( ), the name of one of the gates of the Temple (Act 3:2). It was the entrance to the Court of the Women, immediately opposite the Gate of Shushan, the eastern portal through the outer wall into Solomon’s Porch (see Strong’s Harmony and E position of the Gospels, App. II, p. 33, and Map.) It is evidently the same described by Josephus as immensely massive, and covered with plates of Corinthian bronze (Ant. 15, 11, 5; War, 5:5, 3; 6:5, 3). (See Jour. Sac. Lit. Oct. 1867.) SEE TEMPLE.

Beautiful Gate

A gate of the temple. Act 3:2. Josephus says there were nine gates overlaid with silver and gold; but one without the temple, made of Corinthian brass, far exceeded those of gold and silver. (Wars v. 5, 3) This is supposed to be the gate called Beautiful in the above passage.
