Former dependency of Belgium in Central Africa; estimated area, 918,000 square miles. Formerly the Congo Free State founded by Leopold II, King of the Belgians , the colony was annexed by Belgium in 1908 . The natives practised a low form of fetichism, but missionary work was widespread.
