Camp and Encamp

Camp and Encamp. Exo 14:19. The order in which the Israelites camped in the wilderness was specially prescribed by divine command. The tabernacle was placed in the centre; and round it were the tents of the house of Levi, in four divisions; Moses and Aaron, with the priests, on the east side, the Gershonites westward, Num 3:1-51, the Kohathites southward, and the Memrites northward. The great host, also in four divisions, encircled these. Three tribes lay to the east, Judah the chief, and Issachar and Zebulun. Num 2:2-9. On the south were three other tribesReuben, Simeon, and Gad. The tribes of Joseph’s house lay to the westEphraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin. And on the north side was the camp of Dan, in the order of Dan, Asher, and Naphtali. We read of gates to the camp, Exo 32:26-27; the dead were buried outside these, Num 10:4-5; also lepers, and various unclean persons, and captives, at least for a while, were to be there. Lev 13:46; Lev 14:3; Num 6:1-4; Num 12:14-15; Num 31:19; Num 31:24; Jos 6:23. The skins, etc., of victims were burnt there, and ashes poured out and uncleanness removed thither, and criminals executed there. Lev 4:11-12; Lev 6:11; Lev 8:17; Lev 24:14; Num 15:35-36; Deu 23:10-12.
