Divination by the ascent or motion of smoke. This custom, started in early Greece , was considered a favorable omen if the smoke from burned incense or in connection with a sacrifice rose vertically.

Capnomancy
(from , snzoke,.and , divination) is a species of divination employed by the ancient heathen in their sacrifices. If the smoke was thin and light, and went straight upwards, the omen was favorable; but if the smoke was thick and dark, and rested like a cloud over the fire, the omen was unfavorable.
