Chozeba

Chozeba

Chozeba

(Hebrews Kozeba, , lying; Sept. , Vulg. mendacium), a place whose inhabitants (“men of Chozeba”) are named (1Ch 4:22) among the descendants of Shelah, the son of Judah. The name is sufficiently like the CHEZIB (and especially the reading of the Samaritan Codex of that name, ) where Shelah was born (Gen 38:5) to suggest that the two refer to the same place; that, namely, elsewhere (Jos 15:44) called ACHZIB SEE ACHZIB (q.v.) in Judah.

Chozeba (ADDENDUM):

(1Ch 4:22) is thought by Lieutenant Conder (Tent-Work, 2:336) to be possibly the ruin Kueziba, north-east of Hebron (Quar. Report of “Pal. Explor. Fund,” January 1881, page 51); but it is not necessary to distinguish the place from Chezib or Achzib..

Chozeba

(See CHEZIB.) The descendants of Shelah, Judah’s son, are called “the men of Chozeba, … and these are ancient things” (1Ch 4:22). Identified by Conder (Palestine Exploration, Jan. 1875) with Khirbet Kueizibah. The houses are standing to the height of eight or ten feet. The indications on the hill imply great antiquity. How accurate Scripture is in its names and topography! The Talmud mentions that a plain is in front of Chozeba; so Kueizibah has before it the valley of Berachoth (wady Arrub).
