kount (, saphar, , manah; , psephzo): Used of arithmetical computation to number (Psa 139:18; Num 23:10); also for , kathabh, to reckon, to indicate classification among or identification with, count for a stranger (Job 19:15); count for his enemy (Job 33:10). In the New Testament the arithmetical computation is less prominent, except in the sense of calculate, psephizo, sumpsephzo, to reckon with pebbles, each pebble representing a unit (Luk 14:28; Act 19:19); of moral estimate, hegeomai and logzomai (Phi 3:7, Phi 3:13). The noun, from Hebrew kasath, a count of (Exo 12:4), namely, in the arithmetical sense.

“to have, to hold;” then, “to hold in the mind, to regard, to count,” has this significance in Mat 14:5, “they counted Him as a prophet;” Phm 1:17, “If then thou countest me a partner;” Mar 11:32, AV, (RV, “hold”); Act 20:24, AV. See ABLE.

primarily, “to lead the way;” hence, “to lead before the mind, account,” is found with this meaning in Phi 2:3, RV (AV, “esteem”); Phi 2:6, RV (AV, “thought”); Phi 2:25 (AV, “supposed”); Phi 3:7-8; 2Th 3:15; 1Ti 1:12; 1Ti 6:1; Heb 10:29; Jam 1:2; Heb 11:11 (AV, “judged”); 2Pe 2:13; 2Pe 3:9. “to reckon,” is rendered “count” in 2Co 10:2, RV (AV, “think”); “counted” in the AV of Rom 2:26; Rom 4:3, Rom 4:5; Rom 9:8 (RV, “reckoned”).

akin to psephos, “a stone,” used in voting, occurs in Luk 14:28; Rev 13:18.

“to count up,” occurs in Act 19:19.
