Defraud

signifies “to rob, despoil, defraud,” Mar 10:19; 1Co 6:8; 1Co 7:5 (of that which is due to the condition of natural relationship of husband and wife); in the Middle Voice, “to allow oneself to be defrauded,” 1Co 6:7; in the Passive Voice, “bereft,” 1Ti 6:5, RV, with reference to the truth, with the suggestion of being retributively “robbed” of the truth, through the corrupt condition of the mind. Some mss. have this verb in Jam 5:4 for aphustereo, “to keep back by fraud.” See BEREFT, DESTITUTE, FRAUD. In the Sept., Exo 21:10; in some mss., Deu 24:14.
