Discretion, Age of
In history, period of the French Revolution inaugurated 10 November 1793, when an actress, typifying the “Goddess of Reason,” was enthroned upon the high altar of Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris ; and ending when the Law of 21 February 1795, restored some measure of religious liberty. Thomas Paine wrote his “Age of Reason” in a French prison, 1794; it is a rough-and-ready presentment of Deism.
