(Hebrew Elitsaphan’, , whom God has protected; Sept. ), the name of two men. 1. Second son of Uzziel, and chief of the Kohathite Levites at the Exode (Numbers in, 30; Exo 6:22). B.C. 1657. He, with his elder brother, was directed by Moses to carry away the corpses of their sacrilegious cousins Nadab and Abihu (Lev 10:4). In these two last-cited passages the name is written contracted into ELZAPHAN SEE ELZAPHAN . His family was known and represented in the days of king David (1Ch 15:8), and took part in the revival of Hezekiah (2Ch 29:13).

2. Son of Parnoch, and phylarch (, prince”) of the tribe of Zebulon at the Exode, being one of the men appointed to assist Moses in apportioning the land of Canaan.

el-i-zafan, e-liza-fan (, ‘elcaphan; Septuagint , Eleisaphan, , Elisaphan, , Elisapha, , Elisaphat, God has protected; compare , cephanyah, Zephaniah, Yah has protected, and the Phoenician, , Baal has protected):

(1) The son of Uzziel, the son of Kohath, and so a prince of the Levitical class of the Kohathites (Num 3:30; 1Ch 15:8; 2Ch 29:13). But in 1Ch 15:8; 2Ch 29:13 his class seems to be cordinate with that of the Kohathites. He is called Elzaphan in Exo 6:22; Lev 10:4.

(2) A prince or chief of Zebulun, who represented that tribe in the division of the land (Num 34:25).

1. Son of Uzziel, and a ‘chief’ of the Kohathites. Num 3:30; 1Ch 15:8. He is called ELZAPHAN in Exo 6:22; Lev 10:4. With Mishael he had the painful duty of removing the dead bodies of Nadab and Abihu.

2. Son of Parnach and a prince of the tribe of Zebulun. Num 34:25.

3. Father of certain Levites that assisted Hezekiah in cleansing the temple. 2Ch 29:13. Perhaps the same as No. 1.
