epigonation
Vestment of the Greek and Armenian rites , really proper to bishops , archimandrites , and other dignitaries, but actually worn by many priests. It is diamond-shaped, stiff with cardboard , and embroidery , and hangs from the girdle to below the right knee. It was originally only an ornamental handkerchief called the encheirion, but received its present form in the 12th century .
