Place in Judah where Samson dwelt for a short time. Jdg 15:8; Jdg 15:11. The A.V. reads ambiguously, “he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.” It is better translated “dwelt in the cleft of the rock Etam.”

Etam, The Rock

E’tam, The Rock. A cliff or lofty rock, into a cleft or chasm of which, Samson retired after his slaughter of the Philistines. Jdg 15:8; Jdg 15:11. This natural stronghold was in the tribe of Judah; and near it, probably at its foot, were Lehi and Ramath-lehi and Enhakkore. Jdg 15:9; Jdg 15:14; Jdg 15:17; Jdg 15:19. The name, Etam, was held by a city in the neighborhood of Bethlehem, 2Ch 11:6, which is known to have been situated in the extremely uneven and broken country round the modern Urtas.
