Exceed, Exceeding, Exceedingly
ek-sed: The verb is found in other than its present sense in Job 36:9 the King James Version, They have exceeded (the Revised Version (British and American) behaved themselves proudly); 1Sa 20:41, They … wept … until David exceeded (the King James Version and the Revised Version (British and American)). In both these passages the idea is that of going too far, beyond proper bounds (Hebrew, respectively, gabhar, be strong (in the Hithpael); gadhal, be great (in the Hiphil). Exceeding (as an adverb with adjectives and rarely as an adjective) and exceedingly occur often as representing various expressions for the superlative in Hebrew and Greek

“to throw over or beyond” (huper, “over,” ballo, “to throw”), is translated “exceeding” in 2Co 9:14; Eph 1:19; Eph 2:7; “excelleth” (RV, “surpasseth”) in 2Co 3:10; “passeth” in Eph 3:19 (“surpasseth” might be the meaning here). See EXCEL, SURPASS. Cp. huperbole, under EXCEL, B, No. 1.
“to be over and above, over a certain number or measure, to abound, exceed,” is translated “exceed” in Mat 5:20; 2Co 3:9. See ABUNDANCE, B, No. 1.
“very, exceedingly,” is translated “exceeding” in Mat 2:16 (for Mat 2:10, see No. 2); Mat 4:8; Mat 8:28; Mar 9:3; Luk 23:8. See GREATLY (GREAT), SORE, VERY.
properly the neuter plural of sphodros, “excessive, violent” (from a root indicating restlessness), signifies “very, very much, exceedingly,” Mat 2:10; Mat 17:6, “sore;” Mat 17:23; Mat 18:31, RV, “exceeding,” for AV, “very;” Mat 19:25; Mat 26:22; Mat 27:54, RV, “exceedingly” for AV, “greatly;” Mar 16:4, “very;” Luk 18:23 (ditto); Act 6:7, RV, “exceedingly,” for AV, “greatly;” Rev 16:21. denotes “superabundantly” (huper, “over,” ek, “from,” perissos, “abundant”); in 1Th 3:10, “exceedingly;” Eph 3:20, “exceeding abundantly.” Another form, huperekperissos (huper, and ek and No. 4), is used in 1Th 5:13 (in the best mss.), “exceeding highly.” Cp. the verb huperperisseuo, “to abound more exceedingly,” Rom 5:21; in 2Co 7:4, “I overflow (with joy),” RV, for AV, “I am exceeding (joyful).
