Gederah

Gederah

GEDERAH

A city in the plain of Judah, Jos 15:36, probably the same with the preceding Geder, and with Beth-Gader, 1Ch 2:51 . It would thence seem to have pertained to the family of Caleb.

Gederah

(Heb. with the article hag-Gederah’, , the fortress or sheep-cote SEE GEDER; Sept. ), a town in the Shephelah or plain of Judah (Jos 15:36, where it is mentioned Uetween Adithaim and Gederothaim [q.v.]). According to Eusebius and Jerome (Onomast. s.v. , Gaddera), it was still a village (, Gadora) near Jerusalem “around the Terebinth,” an expression which Raumur (Palast. page 193) interprets of the valley of Elah or the terebinth (1Sa 17:1); although Keil (on Joshua, ad loc.) shows that it means the wood of Mamre, near Hebron, and Reland had pointed out that this was in the mountains and not the lowlands of Judah (Palest. page 802). Van de Velde has identified the site with that of “Gheterah or Ghederah, a village on the south banks of wady Surar, near the high road from Ramleh to Ghuzzeh” (Memoir, page 313); a position exactly agreeing with that of the Cedes (, Jerome Gedrus), described by Eusebius (Ononast. s.v. , Jerome Gaedur) as a very large village ten miles from Diospolis (Lydda) towards Eleutheropolis (Beit-Jibrin). The inhabitants seem to be those designated as Gederites (q.v.) in 1Ch 27:28 (comp. 4:23, “hedges”).

Gederah

the fortress; a fortified place, a town in the plain (shephelah) of Judah (Josh. 15:36). This is a very common Canaanite and Phoenician name. It is the feminine form of Geder (12:13); the plural form is Gederoth (15:41). This place has by some been identified with Jedireh, a ruin 9 miles from Lydda, toward Eleutheropolis, and 4 miles north of Sur’ah (Zorah), in the valley of Elah.

Gederah

(“the sheepcote”.) A town of Judah in the shephelah, or hills between the mountains and plain (Jos 15:36). Near the “valley of the terebinth”, near Azekah and Socoh. (See ELAH.) GEDEROTH “sheepcotes”, and GEDEROTHAIM “two sheepcotes”, were in the same region (Jos 15:41).

Gederah

GEDERAH.AV [Note: Authorized Version.] of 1Ch 4:23 b reads, Those that dwell among plants (RVm [Note: Revised Version margin.] plantations) and hedges, but RV [Note: Revised Version.] gives the inhabitants of Netaim and Gederah, and this is probably the correct rendering. In that case the Gederah referred to would probably be the city of that name located by Jos 15:36 in the Shephlah, the modern Jedireh and the Gedour of Eusebius. The gentilic name Gederathite occurs in 1Ch 12:4.
