GERGESENES

Mat 8:28, in the parallel passages in Mark and Luke, Gadarenes. See GADARA. Some manuscripts have Gadarenes in Mat 8:28, and others Gerasenes; but Gerasa lay forty miles southeast of the scene of the miracle. Some have thought that the remnant of the ancient Gergashites gave their name to this district. A recent explorer finds ruins called Cherza or Gersa, midway on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee; and this may be the ancient Gergesa.

Gergesenes

A place rendered memorable by our Lord’s having visited it, and working a miracle there upon a poor creature under possession of an evil spirit. (See Mat 8:28) It is more than probable, that this was the same nation as is called in the Old Testament Girgashites; one of the cities of Canaan beyond the sea of Tiberias.
