Comprises Northumberland and Durham. Founded in 674 as an abbey by Saint Wilfrid of York . Eleven of the early bishops were saints. Suppressed during the confiscation of churches. Revived as the Vicariate Apostolic of Northern District on 30 January 1688 . Elevated to the diocese of Hexham on 29 September 1850 . Name changed to the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle on 23 May 1861. Suffragan of the archdiocese of Liverpool. See also
