Izhar
(Heb. Yitshar’, , oil, as often; Sept. , ), the second son of Kohath (son of Levi), and father of three sons (Exo 6:18; Exo 6:21; Num 16:1; 1Ch 6:2; 1Ch 6:18; 1Ch 6:38; 1Ch 23:12; 1Ch 23:18). In Num 3:19, his name is Anglicized Izehar. His descendants are called IZHARITES (Heb. Yitshari’, ; Sept. , , [Num 3:27; 1Ch 24:22; 1Ch 26:23; 1Ch 26:29, in the first of which passages it is Anglicized Izeharites]). B.C. post 1856. SEE ZOHAR.
In 1Ch 6:22, Alminiadab is substituted for Izhar, as the son of Kohath and father of Korah, in the line of Samuel. This, however, must be an accidental. error of the scribe, as in 1Ch 6:38, where the same genealogy is repeated, Izhar appears again in his right place. The Codex Alex. in 1Ch 6:22 reads Izhar in place of Amminadab, and the Aldine and Complut. read Amminadab between Izhar and Kore, making another generation. (1) The father of Korah (Num 16:1), descended from a Kohathite Levite of this name, whose descendants formed a family, in the tribe of Levi (Exo 6:18, Exo 6:21; Num 3:19, Num 3:27; 1Ch 6:18, 1Ch 6:38).
(2) A descendant of Judah, whose mother’s name was Helah. the American Revised Version margin gives the name Zohar (1Ch 4:7).
