(Heb. Yehochanan’, Jehovah-granted, q.d. ), the name of several men. SEE JOHANAN; SEE JOHN, etc.
1. (Sept. ) A Korhite and head of the sixth division of Levitical Temple porters (1Ch 26:3). B.C. 1014.
2. (Sept. ) Jehoshaphat’s second captain, in command of 280,000 (?) men (2Ch 17:15); probably the same whose son Ishmael supported Jehoiada in his restoration of prince Jehoash (2Ch 23:1). B.C. cir. 910.
3. (Sept. , Auth. Vers. Johanan.) The father of Azariah, which latter was one of the Ephraimite chiefs who insisted upon the return of the captives from the rival kingdom (2Ch 28:12). B.C. ante 738.
4. (Sept. , A. Vers. Johanan.) A priest, the son of Eliashib, into whose chamber Ezra retired to bewail the profligacy of his countrymen in marrying Gentile wives (Ezr 10:6); doubtless the same elsewhere called JOHANAN in the original (Neh 12:22-23) and perhaps identical with No. 7 below.
5. (Sept. ) One of the sons of Bebai, who divorced his Gentile wife after the Babylonian exile (Ezr 10:28). B.C. 459.
6. (Sept. v.r. , Auth. Vers. Johanan.) Son of Tobiah, the Samaritan enemy of the Jews; and son-in-law of Meshullam (Neh 6:18). B.C. 446.
7. (Sept. ) One of the priests who celebrated with music the reparation of the walls of Jerusalem (Neh 12:42). B.C. 446. He was perhaps the same with No. 4 or No. 8.
8. (Sept. ) A leading priest, the son of Amariah and contemporary with Joiakim (Neh 12:13). B.C. cir. 406. He may have been identical with the preceding.

(“Jehovah’s gift”.) The New Testament John, meaning the same as Theodore.
1. 1Ch 26:1, margin 3; of the sons of Ebiasaph (not Asaph, who was a Gershonite not Kohathite).
2. The captain of 280,000 in and about Jerusalem under Jehoshaphat (2Ch 17:13; 2Ch 17:15; 2Ch 17:19). Probably the same as the father of Ishmael, the captain who helped Jehoiada against Athaliah (2Ch 23:1).

JEHOHANAN.1. 1Ch 26:3 a Korahite doorkeeper. 2. 2Ch 17:15 one of Jehoshaphats five captains. 3. Ezr 10:6 (Jonas, 1Es 9:1; Johanan, Neh 12:22-23; Jonathan, Neh 12:11) high priest. He is called son of Eliashib in Ezr 10:6, Neh 12:23, but was probably his grandson, Joiada being his father (Neh 12:11; Neh 12:22). 4. (1) A Korahite doorkeeper in David’s reign, son of Meshelemiah (1Ch 26:3). Septuagint, Luc, has Jehonathan.
(2) One of the five captains over King Jehoshaphat’s army (2Ch 17:15), probably father of Ishmael, son of Jehohanan (2Ch 23:1).
(3) Ezr 10:6 (the King James Version has Johnnan) = Johanan of Neh 12:22, Neh 12:23 = Jonathan of Neh 12:11, son of Eliashib (Ezr 10:6; but grandson in Neh 12:11). He was high priest in Ezra’s time = Jonas in 1 Esdras 9:1 (the King James Version Joanan).
(4) One of those who had married foreign wives (Ezr 10:28) = Joannes the Revised Version (British and American), Johannes the King James Version (1 Esdras 9:29).
(5) Son of Tobiah, the Ammonite, Nehemiah’s opponent (Neh 6:18, the King James Version Johanan).
(6) Head of the priestly family of Amariah (Neh 12:13).
(7) A priest present at the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem (Neh 12:42).
