JOARIB.The head of the priestly family from which the Maccabees were descended (1Ma 2:1; 1Ma 14:29). Acc. to 1Ch 24:7 this family, there called that of Jehoiarib, was the first of the twenty-four courses of priests.

joa-rib (, Ioarb; the King James Version Jarib): Ancestor of Mattathias (1 Macc 14:29), given as Joarib in the King James Version of 1 Macc 2:1; he was chief of the first of the 24 courses of priests in the reign of David. Varieties of the name are Jarib, Joarib, and Jehoiarib (1Ch 24:7).
