Karl von Schlegel
German poet, critic and scholar Born on 10 March 1772 in Hanover, Germany; died on 11 January 1829 at Dresden, Germany. Educated at the University of Gottingen, he became a Catholic in 1808. Appointed secretary in the chancellery at Vienna where he vigorously opposed Napoleon and delivered his famous lectures on modern history. His importance lies in his work as a literary critic, and as founder with his brother, August Wilhelm , of the Romantic school. He was the author of History of Ancient and Modern Literature, Philosophy of History, Lectures on Modern History, and AEsthetic and Miscellaneous Works.
