Kedemoth

(Heb. Kedemoth’, , beginnings; Sept. , , but in Chronicles v. r. ), a city in the tribe of Reuben, assigned with its suburbs (” villages”), to the Levites of the family of Merari (Jos 13:18; Jos 21:37; 1Ch 6:79; in all which passages it is mentioned between Jahazah and Mephaath), with a desert (, open pasture-grounds) of the same name adjacent, whence Moses despatched the messengers requesting of Sihon a peaceable passage through his dominions; which the Israelites were now entering, having crossed the’ river Arnon (Deu 2:26). These indications fix its locality not far northeast of Dibon-gad, possibly at the ruined village ed Duleitat (Robinson, Researches, 3, Append. p. 170), east of Medeba (Van de Velde, Map).

Kedemoth

kede-moth, ke-demoth (, kedhemoth, eastern parts): From the wilderness to which this town gave its name, Moses sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites in Heshbon (Deu 2:26). It was given by Moses to the tribe of Reuben (Jos 13:18), and assigned to the Merarite Levites (Jos 21:37; 1Ch 6:79). It must probably be sought on the upper course of the Arnon. Buhl (GAP, 268) suggests that it may be identified with Umm er-Resas. See JAHAZ.
