Since the 12th century it has included the old dioceses of Roscrea and Inniscathy, which grew around early monasteries . The remains of the cathedral of Inniscathy and a round tower may still be seen. Birr, the island of Iniscaltra, and Terryglass became celebrated centers of learning. Famous monasteries included those of Lorrha, Ennis, and Quin. The oratory of Saint Lua on Friar’s Island is also of interest.
