British surgeon who promoted the idea of sterile surgery. Born 5 April 1827 at Upton, Essex, England ; died 10 February 1912. Son of Joseph Jackson Lister who helped develop the compound microscope. Quaker. First Baron Lister of Lyme Regis. Renowned for his work in antiseptics, particularly his system of antiseptic bandaging.
