Lysias Claudius
Lysias, Claudius
the chief captain (chiliarch) who commanded the Roman troops in Jerusalem, and sent Paul under guard to the procurator Felix at Caesarea (Acts 21:31-38; 22:24-30). His letter to his superior officer is an interesting specimen of Roman military correspondence (23:26-30). He obtained his Roman citizenship by purchase, and was therefore probably a Greek. Lysias Claudius
A Roman chiliarch or captain in charge of the troops of the citadel Antonia at Paul’s last visit to Jerusalem. He rescued Paul from the fanatical crowd, and subsequently from the plot of more than 40 zealots against his life (Act 21:27-36; Act 23:12-33). With worldly tact he in writing to Felix makes no mention of having bound Paul for scourging (Act 21:33; Act 22:24-29), for he” feared” the consequences to himself of having so treated a Roman citizen. Still his treatment of the apostle otherwise, after he knew his Roman citizenship, was fair and firm.

Lysias, Claudius
LYSIAS, CLAUDIUS.A chiliarch of a cohort in Jerusalem who rescued St. Paul from the Jews in the Temple and took him to the Castle, the fortress Antonia which commanded the Temple. His second name shows him to have been a Greek, but he had bought the Roman citizenship (Act 22:28) and taken the name Claudius. On account of a plot he sent St. Paul guarded to Felix at Csarea, and wrote a letter of which the version in Act 23:26, although doubtless only a paraphrase, yet clearly represents the true sense. It is just what we should expect from Lysias, being much more favourable to his course of action than the real facts warranted. (See art. Egyptian [The]).
