34. MEEKNESS. QUIETNESS
The words () and (), always rendered ‘meek’ and ‘meekness,’ is a characteristic of those who inherit the earth, Mat 5:5; and, part of the fruit of the Spirit in the Christian, Gal 5:23 – it is seen in its perfection in the blessed Lord in the place He took as man. Mat 11:29; 2Co 10:1. It is the spirit and bearing of the pious in relation to men (Tit 3:2), as lowliness marks them in relation to God. It is in meekness that the engrafted word is received, Jam 1:21 – a contrast to the pride and wrath of man, Jam 1:20
The ‘meekness of wisdom’ will be one mark of the behaviour of the wise, Jam 3:13. It is associated with lowliness and long-suffering in Eph 4:2; Col 3:12. See it in varied exercise in Gal 6:1; 2Ti 2:25; 1Co 4:21; 1Pe 3:15. In 1Pe 3:4-5 it is part of the incorruptible ornament of the wife, of great price before God, in her subjection to her husband
, ‘quiet,’ occurs with in 1Pe 3:4, to which the end of 1Pe 3:6 may refer: it is translated ‘peaceable’ in 1Ti 2:2. From it comes , expressing the general idea of ‘quietness,’ as that which is enjoined upon the woman in 1Ti 2:11-12 of the same chapter (rather than ‘silence’ A.V.) See also 2Th 3:12, where it is in contrast to officious meddling with other people’s matters
(perhaps from , ‘gentle’) is only found in 1Ti 2:2, ‘quiet’ or ‘tranquil.’
