“near, nigh,” is used (a) of place, e.g., Luk 19:11, “nigh;” Joh 3:23; Joh 11:54, “near;” Joh 6:19, Joh 6:23, “nigh;” metaphorically in Rom 10:8; Eph 2:13, Eph 2:17, “nigh;” (b) of time, e.g., Mat 24:32-33, “nigh;” so Luk 21:30-31; as a preposition, Heb 6:8, “nigh unto (a curse),” and Heb 8:13, “nigh unto (vanishing away).” See HAND (at), NIGH, READY.

the comparative degree of No. 1, and the neuter of the adjective enguteros, used adverbially, occurs in Rom 13:11.

“near, close by, neighboring” (the neuter of the adjective plesios, used as an adverb), occurs in Joh 4:5. See NEIGHBOR.

“necessary,” is used, in a secondary sense, of persons connected by bonds of nature or friendship, with the meaning “intimate,” in Act 10:24, “(his) near (friends);” it is found in this sense in the papyri. See NECESSARY, NEEDFUL.

transitively, “to bring near” (not in NT; in the Sept., e.g., Gen 48:10; Isa 5:8); intransitively, “to draw near,” e.g., Mat 21:34; Luk 18:40; Luk 19:41, RV, “draw nigh;” see APPROACH, A.

“to come to, go to,” is translated “drew near” in Act 7:31; Heb 10:22. See COME, No. 10.

is used (a) transitively, “to bring,” Act 16:20; 1Pe 3:18; (b) intransitively, “to draw near,” in the latter sense in Act 27:27.
