indicates numeral distinction of objects of similar character, and is used (a) absolutely, e.g., Mat 20:3 (plural); (b) attached to a noun, e.g., Mat 21:36; (c) with the article, e.g., Mat 5:39; 1Co 14:29 (plural, RV); in Mat 13:5; Luk 9:19; Joh 9:9, e.g., RV, “others” (AV, “some”); in Mat 25:20, RV, “other” (AV, “beside them … more”). indicates either numerical distinction, e.g., Luk 4:43; Luk 5:7; or generic distinction, different in character, etc., e.g., Luk 9:29, “(the fashion of His countenance) was altered,” lit., “became other;” Luk 23:32, “two others, (malefactors),” RV, where the plural serves to make the necessary distinction between them and Christ; Act 2:4; Act 19:39 (“other matters”); 1Co 14:21, AV, “other” (RV, “strange”); 2Co 11:4 (2nd and 3rd parts, RV, “different;” in the 1st clause, allos, “another”). signifies “remaining, the rest.” It is translated “other,” or “others,” e.g., in Mat 25:11; Mar 4:19; Luk 18:9; Act 28:9; Rom 1:13; 1Co 9:5; Eph 2:3; 1Th 4:13; 1Th 5:6; 1Ti 5:20, e.g., the RV renders this word “the rest” (AV, “other” or “others”); in Eph 4:17, some mss. have loipa, neuter plural, AV, “other (Gentiles);” see the RV See REMNANT, REST (the).
“belonging to another, not one’s own,” is translated “other men’s” in 2Co 10:15; 1Ti 5:22; in Heb 9:25, RV, “not his own” (AV, “of others”). See ALIEN, MAN’S, Note (1), STRANGE, STRANGER.
in Rom 1:12, used in the dative case, is translated in the RV “(each of us by the) other’s” (AV, “mutual”); the accusative is translated “other” in Phi 2:3. See MUTUAL and ONE ANOTHER.
“one,” is sometimes translated “other” when expressing the second of a pair, e.g., Mat 24:40, AV (RV, “one”), See ONE, A (4).
signifying “that one,” implying remoteness as compared with houtos, “this,” is translated “the other,” e.g., in Mat 23:23; Luk 11:42; Luk 18:14.
Notes: (1) In Act 26:22, AV, ouden ektos, lit., “nothing besides” is translated “none other things” (RV, “nothing but”). (2) The plural of the definite article is translated “others” in Act 17:32; in Jud 1:23, AV, “others” (RV, “some”). (3) In Luk 24:1, the plural of tis, “a certain one,” is found in some mss., and translated “certain others” in the AV.
