denotes “it is necessary,” “one must;” in Luk 24:26, AV, “ought” (RV “behoved it”); the neuter of the present participle, used as a noun, is translated “things which they ought (not)” in 1Ti 5:13; in Act 19:36, “ye ought” (see NEED), See MUST, No. 1.
“to owe,” is translated “ought,” with various personal pronouns, in Joh 13:14; Joh 19:7; Act 17:29; Rom 15:1; Heb 5:3, AV (RV, “he is bound”); Heb 5:12; 1Jo 3:16; 1Jo 4:11; 3Jo 1:8; with other subjects in 1Co 11:7, 1Co 11:10; 2Co 12:14; Eph 5:28; 1Jo 2:6. See BEHOVE, OWE, etc.
an impersonal verb (akin to chaomai, “to use”), occurs in Jam 3:10, “(these things) ought (not so to be),” lit., “it is not befitting, these things so to be.”
