(Heb. Parosh’, , flea; Sept. , but in Ezr 2:3; A.V. Pharosh, in Ezr 8:3), a Jew whose retainers or descendants, in number 2172, returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel (Ezr 2:3; Neh 7:8). Another detachment of 150 males, with Zechariah at their head, accompanied Ezra (Ezr 8:3). Seven of the family had married foreign wives (Ezr 10:25). They assisted in the building of the wall of Jerusalem (Neh 3:25), and signed the covenant with Nehemiah (Neh 10:14), either individually, or perhaps representatively in the person of Parosh himself, if then surviving. B.C. ante 545-445.

PAROSH.The name of a post-exilic family (Ezr 2:3 = Neh 7:8) Ezr 8:3; Ezr 10:25, Neh 3:25; Neh 10:14. The Gr. form Phoros is adopted in 1Es 5:9; 1Es 8:30; 1Es 9:26.

We read of the tribe of Parosh, Ezr 2:3. Perhaps his name is derived from Parah, to produce; and Hash, moth; and if so, the meaning might be, life is but vanity.

Parosh
parosh, parosh (, parosh, flea (leap)): a family that in part returned under Zerubbabel (Ezr 2:3; Neh 7:8), and in part under Ezra (Ezr 8:3; there spelt Pharosh, the King James Version). Some of the family had foreign wives (Ezr 10:25). One descendant, Pedaiah (see PEDAIAH, (3)), helped to rebuild the city walls (Neh 3:25), and others were among those who sealed the covenant of Nehemiah (Neh 10:1, Neh 10:14).
