(, sark, or , sareka; Sept. ; Vulg. princeps), only used in Daniel 6; the Chaldee equivalent for Hebrew shotr, probably from Sara, Zend. a head (see Strabo, 11:331). – is connected with the Sanskrit siras or iras, and is traced in Sargon and other words (Eichhoff, Vergl. prezi-dent (, sarakh): Used only in Dan 6:2-7. Probably a Persian derivative from sar, head, and the Aramaic equivalent for Hebrew shoter. The meaning is self-evident and refers to the appointment of Daniel by Darius to be one of the three princes who had rule over the satraps of the empire.
