Established as the vicariate Apostolic of North Carolina on 3 March 1868. Elevated to the diocese of Raleigh on 12 December 1924. Originally a suffragan of the archdiocese of Baltimore; on 10 February 1962 the metropolitan was changed to the archdiocese of Atlanta.
