Sorrow (Noun and Verb), Sorrowful
“grief, sorrow,” is translated “sorrow” in Luk 22:45; Joh 16:6, Joh 16:20-22; Rom 9:2, RV (AV, “heaviness”); 2Co 2:1, RV; 2Co 2:3, 2Co 2:7; 2Co 7:10 (twice); Phi 2:27 (twice). See GRIEF.
“pain, consuming grief, distress,” whether of body or mind, is used of the latter, Rom 9:2, RV, “pain;” 1Ti 6:10.
“a birth-pang, travail, pain,” “sorrows,” Mat 24:8; Mar 13:8; see PAIN, A, No. 2.
“mourning,” “sorrow,” Rev 18:7 (twice); Rev 21:4; see MOURN.

“to cause pain” (akin to A, No. 2), is used in the Middle Voice in Luk 2:48; Act 20:38, see ANGUISH, B, No. 3.
“very sad, deeply grieved” (peri, intensive), is used in Mat 26:38; Mar 14:34, “exceeding sorrowful;” Mar 6:26; Luk 18:23 (Luk 18:24 in some mss.).
denotes “free from grief” (a, negative, lupe, “grief”), comparative degree in Phi 2:28, “less sorrowful,” their joy would mean the removal of a burden from his heart.
