most frequently “a voice,” is translated “sound” in Mat 24:31 (AV marg., “voice”); Joh 3:8, AV (RV, “voice”); so 1Co 14:7 (1st part), 1Co 14:8; Rev 1:15; Rev 18:22 (2nd part, RV, “voice”); AV and RV in Rev 9:9 (twice); in Act 2:6, RV, “(this) sound (was heard),” AV, “(this) was noised abroad.”
“a noise, a sound of any sort” (Eng., “echo”), is translated “sound” in Act 2:2; Heb 12:19. See ROARING, B, RUMOR.
akin to phthengomai, “to utter a voice,” occurs in Rom 10:18; 1Co 14:7. In the Sept., Psa 19:4.
akin to A, No. 2, occurs in 1Co 13:1, “sounding (brass);” in some mss., Luk 21:25. See ROARING.
“to sound forth as a trumpet” or “thunder” (ex, “out,” and No. 1), is used in 1Th 1:8, “sounded forth,” Passive Voice, lit., “has been sounded out.” In the Sept., Joe 3:14.
“to sound a trumpet” (salpinx), occurs in Mat 6:2; 1Co 15:52, “the trumpet shall sound;” Rev 8:6-8, Rev 8:10, Rev 8:12-13; Rev 9:1, Rev 9:13; Rev 10:7; Rev 11:15.
“to heave the lead” (bolis, “that which is thrown or hurled,” akin to ballo, “to throw;” sounding-lead), to take soundings, occurs in Act 27:28 (twice).
Note: In Luk 1:44, AV, ginomai, “to become,” is rendered “sounded” (RV, “came”).
