Speech Situation

(1) A situation in which a complete utterance is made by a speaker and correctly interpreted, by a hearer to whom it is addressed, as referring to some feature of the immediate environment.

(2) More generallythe circumstances attending any use of speech from which some of the defining characteristics of a primary speech situation are absent. See Language. — M.B.
