Stone-Squarers
STONE-SQUARERS.Only 1Ki 5:18 AV [Note: Authorized Version.] ; RV [Note: Revised Version.] has Gebalites as Jos 13:5 RV [Note: Revised Version.] , that is, men of the Phnician city of Gebal, mentioned Eze 27:9, where the ancients and wise men of Gebal are referred to as calkers of ships. It has recently been suggested that the gentilic name had become an appellative in the sense of stonecutter (S BOT, Kings, 83 f.), which is the meaning of AV [Note: Authorized Version.] . Others would emend to read did hew them and border them, i.e. provide the stones with marginal drafts or with bevels. Cf. Arts and Crafts, 3.
