Torment (Noun and Verb)
akin to basanizo (see TOIL, No. 2), is used of Divine judgments in Rev 9:5; Rev 14:11; Rev 18:7, Rev 18:10, Rev 18:15.
primarily “a touchstone,” employed in testing metals, hence, “torment,” is used (a) of physical diseases, Mat 4:24; (b) of a condition of retribution in Hades Luk 16:23, Luk 16:28.
Note: In 1Jo 4:18, AV, kolasis, “punishment” (RV), is rendered “torment.” See PUNISHMENT, No. 3.
