Wild Beast Of The Islands
Wild Beast Of The Islands
is the rendering of the A.V. at Isa 13:22; Isa 34:14; Jeremiah 1:39, of the Heb. word which occurs in this sense only in the plur. , iyim, although it frequently occurs both in the sing. and plur. in the sense of “island.” The ancient interpreters variously understand cats (Chald. and Kimchi) and spectres (Sept. ); but later writers generally agree that the jackal (q.v.) is meant, from its habit of howling (Bochart, Hieroz. 1:843).
