Arcesilaus

Arcesilaus

Arcesilaus

(315-241 B.C.) Greek philosopher from Pitane in Aeolis. He succeeded Crates in the chair of the Platonic Academy and became the founder of the second or so-called middle academy. In opposition to both Stoicism and Epicureanism, he advocated a scepticism that was not so extreme as that of Pyrrho although he despaired of man’s attaining truth. Suspended judgment was to him the best approach. — L.E.D.
