the name of two men.
1. (Heb. Asiel/, , created by God; Sept. .) The father of Seraiah, and progenitor of one of the Simeonite chiefs that expelled the Hamite aboriaines from the fertile valleys near Gedor in the time of Hezekiah (1Ch 4:35). B.C. ante 712.
2. (Vulg. Asiel, for the Greek text is not extant.) The last named of the five scribes whom the divine voice is represented, in the fanciful vision of 2Es 14:24, as directing Ezra to bring for the purpose of recording the revelation about to be communicated to him.

(1) Grandfather of Jehu, one of the Simeonite princes mentioned in 1Ch 4:35 as sharing Judah’s inheritance (see Jos 19:9).
(2) A swift writer engaged by Ezra to transcribe the law (2 Esdras 14:24).
(3) An ancestor of Tobit (Tobit 1:1). Compare Jahzeel or Jahziel (Gen 46:24).
