candelabrum

Name applied in early Christian times to a hanging chandelier for lamps, e.g., that presented by Constantine to the Lateran, Rome. Sometimes these chandeliers stood before the altar . In the Middle Ages the term was used to denote seven-branch candlesticks, e.g., the Candelabrum of Rheims and the Virgin’s Tree of Milan, made in imitation of the candlestick of the Jewish Temple.
