Six candlesticks with candles, three on each side of the crucifix , kept on the main altar. Two, one at each side of the altar, must be used during low Mass. Extra candlesticks and candelabra are used for ornamentation. Altar-candlesticks may be of any kind of metal, or gilded or silvered wood. Their use became general only in he 16th century.
