Dissociation

(Lat. dis + socius, a companion) The operation of mind by which the elements of a complex are discriminated. Dissociative discrimination is facilitated when elements which are commonly conjoined are found in new combinations. James calls this the law of “dissociation by varying concomitants.” (Principles of Psychology, I, 506.) — I.W.
