ELIASHIB
A high priest in the days of Nehemiah, who took part in rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem, Neh 3:1 . The same person probably was afterwards censured for profaning the temple, by giving the use of one of its chambers to a heathen and an Ammonite, his relative, Deu 23:3,4 Neh 12:10 13:1-9.

Eliashib
(Hebrew Elyashib’, , whom God will restore; Sept. , , , , etc.; Josephus (Vulg. Eliasub, Eliasib), a common name of Israelites, especially at the later period of the O.T. history.
1. A priest in the time of king David; head of the eleventh “course” in the order of the “governors” () of the sanctuary (1Ch 24:12). B.C. 1013.
2. A Levitical singer who repudiated his Gentile wife after the exile (Ezr 10:24). B.C. 458.
3. An Israelite of the lineage of Zattu, who did the same (Ezr 10:27). B.C. 458.
4. An Israelite of the lineage of Bani, who did the same (Ezr 10:36). B.C. 458.
5. The high-priest of the Jews in the time of Nehemiah (Neh 12:28). B.C. 446. With the assistance of his fellow-priests, he rebuilt the eastern city wall adjoining the Temple (Neh 3:1). His own extensive mansion was doubtless situated in the same vicinity, probably on the ridge Ophel (Nehemiah in, 20,21). SEE JERUSALEM.
Eliashib was in some way allied (=near) to Tobiah the Ammonite, for whom he had prepared an ante-room in the Temple, a desecration which excited the pious indignation of Nehemiah (Neh 13:4; Neh 13:7). One of the grandsons of Eliashib had also married the daughter of Sanballat the Horonite (Neh 13:28). There seems no reason to doubt that the same Eliashib is referred to in Ezr 10:6, as the father of Johanan, who occupied an apartment in the Temple (comp. Josephus, Ant. 11:5, 4). He is evidently the same with the son of Joiakim and father of Joiada (Josephus, “Judas,” Ant. 11:7, 1), in the succession of high-priests (Neh 12:10; Neh 12:22). SEE HIGH-PRIEST.
6. A son of Elioenai, and member of the latest family of the lineage of Zerubbabel, mentioned in the Old Test. (1Ch 3:24). B.C. 406.

Eliashib
whom God will restore. (1.) A priest, head of one of the courses of the priests of the time of David (1 Chr. 24:12).
(2.) A high priest in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah (Neh. 12:22, 23). He rebuilt the eastern city wall (3:1), his own mansion being in that quarter, on the ridge Ophel (3:20, 21). His indulgence of Tobiah the Ammonite provoked the indignation of Nehemiah (13:4, 7).

1. 1Ch 24:12.
2. 1Ch 3:24.
3. High priest when Nehemiah rebuilt the walls (Neh 3:1-20-21). Energetic in building the sheepgate, sanctifying and setting up its doors; but relationship to Tobiah the Ammonite outweighed regard for the sanctity of the temple. Nehemiah was angry with him for preparing a room therein for his pagan connection (Neh 13:4-7), in opposition to God’s prohibition (Deu 23:3-4). His grandson too had married the pagan Horonite Sanballat’s daughter (Neh 13:28). Ungodly alliances are a snare to religious professors (2Co 6:14-18; Mat 10:37). “Therefore (says Nehemiah) I chased him from me. Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood.” His genealogy is given (Neh 12:10; Neh 12:22), see Ezr 10:6.

Eliashib
ELIASHIB.1. The high priest who was contemporary with Nehemiah. He was son of Joiakim, grandson of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, the contemporary of Zerubbabel (Neh 12:10, Ezr 3:1), and father of Joiada (Neh 12:10; Neh 13:28). He assisted in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerus, during Nehemiahs governorship (Neh 3:1). He can have had no sympathy with the exclusive policy of Ezra and Nehemiah, for both he himself and members of his family allied themselves with the leading foreign opponents of Nehemiah. See Joiada, No. 2, Tobiah, and Sanballat. 2. A singer of the time of Ezra, who had married a foreign wife (Ezr 10:24); called in 1Es 9:24 Eliasibus. 3. An Israelite of the family of Zattu (Ezr 10:27; in 1Es 9:28 Eliasimus); and 4. another of the family of Bani (Ezr 10:36; called in 1Es 9:34 Enasibus), who had married foreign wives. 5. A son of Elioenai (1Ch 3:24). 6. The name of a priestly house (1Ch 24:12). 7. Father of Jehohanan, to whose chamber in the Temple Ezra resorted (Ezr 10:6); possibly identical with No. 1.
