“to flee” (Lat., fuga, “flight,” etc.; cp. Eng. “fugitive, subterfuge”), is rendered “escape” in Mat 23:33; Heb 11:34. See FLEE.
“to flee away from” (apo, “from,” and No. 1), is used in 2Pe 1:4; 2Pe 2:18, 2Pe 2:20.
lit., “to flee through,” is used of the “escaping” of prisoners from a ship, Act 27:42. For the word in Act 27:44, see No. 5.
“to flee out of a place” (ek, “out of,” and No. 1), is said of the “escape” of prisoners, Act 16:27; of Sceva’s sons, “fleeing” from the demoniac, Act 19:16; of Paul’s escape from Damascus, 2Co 11:33; elsewhere with reference to the judgments of God, Luk 21:36; Rom 2:3; Heb 2:3; Heb 12:25; 1Th 5:3. in the Active Voice, “to bring safely through a danger” (dia, “through,” intensive, sozo, “to save”), to make completely whole, to heal, Luk 7:3; to bring “safe,” Act 23:24; “to save,” Act 27:43; in the Passive Voice, Mat 14:36, “were made whole;” 1Pe 3:20. It is also used in the Passive Voice, signifying “to escape,” said of shipwrecked mariners, Act 27:44; Act 28:1, Act 28:4. See HEAL, SAFE, SAVE.
Note: Exerchomai, “to come or go out of a place,” is rendered, “He escape,” in Joh 10:39, AV, an unsuitable translation, both in meaning and in regard to the circumstances of the Lord’s departure from His would-be captors. The RV “went forth” is both accurate and appropriate to the dignity of the Lord’s actions.
“a way out” (ek, “out,” baino, “to go”), denotes (a) “an escape,” 1Co 10:13, used with the definite article and translated “the way of escape,” as afforded by God in case of temptation; (b) “an issue or result,” Heb 13:7. See END, ISSUE. Cp. ekbaino, “to go out,” Heb 11:15 (some mss. have exerchomai).
